**************************************

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Skelly, age 91, of Dyker Heights Brooklyn, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on May 11, 2026, after living a remarkable life filled with faith, friendship, laughter, and love.

Born on December 22, 1934, George spent his entire life in Brooklyn, the place he proudly called home. Brooklyn was not just where George lived — it was part of who he was. He loved his neighborhood, his church, and the people who became such an important part of his life over the years.

George was a proud and independent man who truly lived life to the fullest. He never let grass grow under his feet and was always keeping busy, checking in on others, or finding a reason to gather with family and friends. He worked in the Hall of Records in New York City for forty years, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.

Outside of work, George loved cooking, entertaining, gardening, and bringing people together. His cheesecake was legendary and became a favorite at every holiday, celebration, and gathering he attended. George was a devoted fan of the New York Mets and faithfully cheered them on from his living room through every good and bad season. Much like the loyalty he showed to his team, George was also a loyal and steadfast friend to all who knew and loved him.

George was known for speaking his mind, and that sincerity and humor were part of what made him so loved by those around him. He had a special way of making people laugh, feel welcome, and feel at home.

To those in his neighborhood, George was everyone’s uncle on the block in Brooklyn. Many lovingly referred to him as “the mayor of the block.” No matter who walked by, George would always wave from his favorite chair, keeping watch over the neighborhood he loved so much. His neighbors often said, “If George’s door was open, we knew he was good.” He disliked wearing shoes and could usually be found walking around in his socks, completely comfortable and content simply being himself.

George also made it a point to stay connected to the people he loved. Family and friends could always count on receiving one of his familiar phone calls beginning with, “Hi, it’s George just checking in.” Those simple words meant so much and reflected the caring and thoughtful person he was.

He was blessed with what many lovingly referred to as his “two families.” George is survived by his brother, Patrick Skelly, and his wife, Joan; his nephew, Glen Skelly, and Glen’s spouse, Theresa; his niece, Kim Drewes, and her spouse, Tim; along with five beloved great-nieces and great-nephews who brought him tremendous joy.

George’s second family was made up of his beloved Brooklyn neighbors and dear friends who remained by his side throughout the years. They often shared that George was truly “a character,” and many lovingly referred to him simply as “Uncle George.” Their friendships, laughter, and care brought George comfort and happiness throughout his life.

For as long as anyone can remember, George faithfully dedicated his time to Saint Bernadette Church, always willing to help wherever needed. His faith, generosity, and commitment to helping others were constants throughout his life.

Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing on Monday, May 18th, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Aievoli Funeral Home, 1275 65th Street, Brooklyn, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Bernadette Church on Tuesday, May 19th, at 10:00 a.m. George will be laid to rest at Saint Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to help the poor through Saint Bernadette Church.

George was the life of the party, a loyal friend, a devoted family member, and a constant presence in the lives of so many. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, strong opinions, welcoming heart, and the joy he brought wherever he went. He will be dearly missed and forever loved.

As George would say, “Talk soon.”
